Safety Investigation – Human Performance (Psychology)

Human beings are at the heart of every system. From design and implementation, to managing it throughout its operational life, and finally its disposal. Humans make the decisions about how systems are planned, resourced, organised and controlled. As a result, knowledge of human factors is essential. This workshop provides a fundamental understanding of the psychological underpinnings of human behaviour when interacting with complex systems.

The increasing complexity and demands made on the user by modern systems mean that there is an escalating need for trained human factors and safety professionals to advise on and implement safe methods and systems of operation. Skills and knowledge learned on this workshop will enable participants to adopt a new view of human error, avoiding hindsight biases, and to better understand why those involved in occurrences made the decisions that they did.

Written by a European Association of Aviation Psychology (EAAP) qualified aviation psychologist and peer-reviewed by a leading Australian airline, this course provides an up-to-date introduction to human factors as they affect both investigators and those that they investigate.

Described by a peer reviewer as ‘a practical application for attendees … aiding advancement of individual qualifications’ it provides an opportunity to learn why decisions made by individuals at the time made sense and is suitable for anybody interested in human factors, not just investigators.

The syllabus covers a wide range of human behaviour, and how it affects both those involved in occurrences and the people appointed to investigate them. The workshop is continuously updated as theory evolves, and currently addresses the following topics:
